Joint meeting with RM-HFES.
Topic: Amplifying Learning & Human Cognition: CU's Center for Lifelong Learning & Design

Speakers: Gerhard Fischer, Andrew Gorman, more
Location: University of Colorado, Center for Lifelong Learning and Design, Boulder

L3D researchers demo'ed these prototypes, focusing on their ergonomics, user interface, and overall user experience. The demos were informal, so practitioners and researchers can swap ideas. Which of these concepts will appear in products one day? Which concepts apply to our work today?

[1] Beyond the Desktop with the Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory and Google Earth: Hal Eden. Interactive visualizations for participative, collaborative urban planning and design.

[2] Cognitive Levers: Stefan Carmien. PDA-based cognitive aids for individuals with cognitive disabilities, coupled with caregiver tools for end-user programming and remote notification, monitoring and support with internet-based multimedia technologies such as Flash Communication Server and Google Earth.

[3] Craft Technology Group: Michael Eisenberg, Leah Buechley and Nwanua Elumeze. Integrating new technology-- such as 3D printers, laser cutters and conductive thread-- with hands-on educational crafts.

Joint meeting with RMIUG.
Topic: Visio for Information Architecture and UI Design: Beyond Boxes and Arrows

Speakers: Jason T. Williams, Intuitect. Laurie Lamar.
Location: National Center for Atmospheric Research, Bouler

First, Laurie Lamar briefly explained Visio basics, then moved on to intermediate topics:

•  Re-using pieces of a Visio diagram. Suppose you are creating a website site map, including navigation on every page. If the navigation changes, you change it once, and the changes appear in every instance of the navigation.

•  Creating a control panel on the Visio page, to show and hide Visio layers. This technique has been used to illustrate different page states for AJAX applications .

The second speaker, Jason T. Williams, will demonstrate Intuitect™, a Visio add-on that offers seamless construction of navigation maps (sitemaps), wireframes, flowmaps, and high-fidelity prototypes. Intuitect eliminates the time-consuming, manual, repetitive work that's usually associated with those deliverables. Specifically, Jason will show how to

•  Quickly transform “white board” concepts into high-level navigation (sitemap) diagrams

•  Save and re-use wireframes

•  Export Intuitect projects to HTML, XML or Excel spreadsheet for validation, content inventories and cross-functional collaboration.

Joint meeting with RM-HFES.
Topic: Rundown of the Year's "User Experience" Conferences - CHI, UPA, HFES

Speakers: Terence Andre (U. S. Air Force Academy), Mike Herold (IBM), Larry Marine (Intuitive Design), Beth Meyer (Consultant), Pawan Vora (Alpha Cube Designs)
Location: Braun's Bar and Grill, Denver

Three of the premier 2006 conferences for User Experience are CHI , UPA, and the upcoming HFES.

We enjoyed an informal discussion of what happened — or will happen — at those conferences. Speakers shared their notes on talks they gave, talks they observed, and trends that could affect User Experience work... what was interesting, what was popular, and what was controversial. Before this meeting, there was a planning meeting for the new Colorado UPA chapter.
